Yards that welcome bees
A homeowner can feed honey bees in Orange, Seminole, or Osceola County without ever lifting a lid. The work is forage, water, and leaving bloom standing when a spray would be easier. UF/IFAS already wrote the plant table and the neighbor rules. This page is a reading of those papers for a Central Florida lot.

Climate, plant communities, and timing of floral resources differ significantly between the three main regions in Florida.
Why bees matter here
Keeping Bees in Florida cites USDA NASS 2022: more than 650,000 managed colonies in the state and 8 million pounds of honey in 2021, with nearly 5,000 registered keepers as of December 2022. Those figures describe a working insect. Citrus, vegetables, and the waste-ground Bidens that hold August together all use the same flight.
Keeping Bees in Florida also names the cost. Queens can lay almost any month. Varroa rides that brood. Mid-summer forage thins, and a heavy spring colony can starve in August. Habitat that blooms after citrus is not decoration. It is the difference between a live box and an empty one.
Three small actions
- Plant from Florida Honey Bee Plants and FDACS Plants for Bees. For this band: maple and willow early, citrus in March and April, gallberry, cabbage palm, saw palmetto, then Spanish needles (Bidens) on vacant ground through the warm months. Sow a Gulf Coast mix that matches the Florida Honey Bee Plants central list, not a northern wildflower tin. Get this. The month walk lives on forage.
- Set shallow water with stones so a bee can land, on the same ground as the forage. Good Neighbor Guidelines wants that drink at home, not at a pool. Stones in a shallow dish on this lot, so the commute is not the neighbor's pool. Get this. The siting rules live on neighbor guidelines.
- Skip the broadcast insecticide on blooming plants. If a product goes on a leaf, the label is the law. pesticides is the spray paper. Open the live bottle after that. Pull the weeds by hand when the job is a row of Bidens, not a broadcast jug. Get this.

Brazilian pepper can bloom in some Septembers. Keeping Bees in Florida notes it. The plant is invasive. Leave it off a planting list. If a wild stand already opens, that is a field note, not a landscaping plan.

Do I need a hive?
No box required. Forage, water, and an unsprayed bloom already feed the bees that commute through a lot. A hive is a second door, on the stack page.
